Optic fiber is a type of transparent fiber that is made of glass or silica which is mainly used for communication and data transmitting. It works by photons traveling down the cable and reflect internally and backscatter to complete a cycle. The advantages of the optic fiber in the case of fire protection system are: it does not require electricity in order to detect potential wildfire threats, the optic fiber is made of glass and silica, which is hard to damage when it is placed outside. Also, it can endure the strike of lightening in rainy days. The optic fiber can detect continuously which helps the system to analyze a complete set of temperature data and alarm the people in the house immediately.

Distributed Temperature Sensing System

Distributed temperature sensing systems are sensors that are fiber optic based, which measure temperature by fiber optic sensing cable. The unique feature of a distributed temperature sensing system is that it provides a continuous and distributed temperature data which comes from the backscattering in the optical fibers that can detect temperatures from a long distance,

The DTS system contains a pulsed laser which sends a pulse into the optical fiber. As the pulse travels along the length of the optical fiber, the small imperfections in the glass will reflect photons and a small amount of the original laser pulse is backscattered to the DTS sensing system. After the DTS system has received the backscattered laser pulse, it will calculate the temperature by analyzing the power of the reflected pulse. When the system is applied to the fire protection system, it can help to detect abnormal temperature changes and display the location of the event within a meter.

Sprinklers

Similar to the function of the gardening sprinkler, the sprinklers will be place at the critical spots of the house and will be trigger when the DTS sensing system detects the possible wildfire threats. The Sprinklers will make the house wet by spreading water on and around the house to assure the safety and prevent damages from wildfires.
